Costumed Philosophy Debate Tackles Mother Nature

College of Lake County's philosophy instructors will hold their annual costumed debate Wednesday.

This year faculty members portraying four noted philosophers will pose the question, " - Does nature have an URL?"

The program will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in the Learning Resource Center atrium at the Grayslake campus. Each instructor will present information on the topic, while wearing an original costume.

These well-attended events have been hilarious in past years and are beloved by both students and faculty members.

Philosophy instructor Rebecca Thall will portray novelist and screenwriter Ayn Rand. Rand was born in Russia and immigrated to the United States in 1926. She founded the Objectivist Society, and her philosophy stressed individuality and reason.

Philosophy and humanities instructor Ken Simonsen will depict Sir Francis Bacon. Bacon was an English scholar and founder of the scientific method born in 1571. He believed that scientific inquiry provided the path to utopia.

Philosophy and humanities instructor Leslie Hopkins will portray Carolyn Merchant, who is a professor of environmental history and philosophy at the University of California - Berkeley. …
