The civil trial and appeal committee of the Lake County Bar Association is hosting its third annual seminar and golf outing today.

Waukegan attorney Scott Gibson, committee chairman, said more than 80 attorneys have signed up to attend the event.

On the agenda for the morning information segment of the day are a discussion of the mediation process by Circuit Judges Stephen Walter, John Goshgarian and Bernard Drew, a talk on expert testimony by Circuit Judge Henry Tonigan and Associate Judge Terrence Brady, and tips on practice before the appellate court by Justice Fred Gieger.

Gibson said those topics and others will be supplemented with handouts discussing the most recent developments in the law of those areas and all the attendees will participate in a group discussion of the state of day-to-day conduct of business in the Waukegan courthouse before hitting the links.

"The process of continuing education for attorneys is absolutely critical because cases are being decided every day that change the nature of the law," Gibson said.

"It is also good to have it in a relaxed setting followed by the golf outing because it allows us to build that sense of community within the ranks."

Volunteers needed: Friday is the final day to register to be trained as a volunteer for the Lake County domestic violence shelter and prevention agency A Safe Place.

Volunteers are needed in most client service programs run by the agency including their 24-hour crisis line, court advocacy, children's mentors and prevention education programs in schools. …
