RACING: CUBISM LOOKS IN TOP SHAPE; Marcus in Line for Stewards' Strike on Hills Sprinter

JOHN HILLS has called up South African artist Basil Marcus to ride Cubism in the pounds 85,000 dash for the Vodafone Stewards' Cup at Goodwood this afternoon.

Twelve months ago John Hills signed his brother Michael for the ride and their horse was first home on the stands' side of the Goodwood track, but that was only enough to give him third place behind Tayseer and Bon Ami.

This time John was able to pick a high position for his speedster on Thursday and with Marcus, fresh from Thursday's big win on Whitbarrow, doing the steering there is some quiet confidence that the race might become Hills' property at last.

Horses like Lochsong, Danetime and Harmonic Way have managed to win from a low draw, but they turned into top-flight sprinters and there is no horse of that quality apparent in today's line-up.

"This race has been the plan for a while and, although this horse had a few problems in the spring, I have been able to get a clear run with him since his latest race at Newbury," said the trainer.

"We are putting a visor on Cubism for the first time, which might just help him concentrate now he is getting older. We could have done without Thursday's rain, but he has got to have a good shout. …
