Retired Supreme Court Justice Abraham F. Sarmiento Celebrates His 80th Birthday Today

RETIRED Supreme Court Justice Abraham F. Sarmiento celebrates his 80th birthday today. World War II veteran, scholar, legal luminary and, above all, champion of human rights and civil liberties, he continues to be a vigilant sentinel of the people's rights and liberties. He retired on October 8, 1991 as Justice of the Highest Court of the land.

Justice Sarmiento has received numerous honors for his accomplishments. A man who bravely faced the rigorous years of the martial law era, he was cited by the University of the Philippines Student Council, together with several organizations, in commemoration of International Human Rights Day, on December 12, 1991 in these words:

"For having demonstrated and enriched, by the shining example of his works, the finest tradition of love of justice and liberty, and for having distinguished himself in the arduous advocacy of human rights and civil liberties, as public servant and a private citizen, that we may move closer towards the realization of our cherished dream of a just and humane society for all. …
