BASED at Uwic, (University of Wales Institute, Cardiff), the National Centre for Product Design & Development Research is dedicated to the research into and application of advanced product design and development technology and techniques.

The centre works with businesses to assist in new product design, development and prototyping.

PDR uses the latest 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) and rapid prototyping technology to develop products and to prototype parts. The centre also conducts 3D scanning, animation, vacuum casting CNC machining and injection molding.

Contract activities are carried out under the ISO 9001 quality standard. This standard ensures that all design and prototyping projects are managed effectively and helps to maintain a "right first time on time" product development service.

The centre has an enviable reputation for its research activities into the use of stereolithography to produce bone structure models direct from CT scan data which are then used to reduce both the risk and the time involved in major surgery.

PDR also won the 3D Systems Worldwide Achievement Award last year for its work in adapting the stereolithography rapid prototyping process for use in the prototyping of over-moulded metal parts.

In the latest move to provide a superior service PDR has now relocated to a its new purposebuilt premises on Uwic's Llandaff campus. The building provides an environment uniquely specified to meet the needs of advanced product development and has been designed to allow visiting companies to view technologies in use while the activity of the centre continues uninterrupted. …
