The Village of Palatine is mourning the loss of former Village President Howard I. Olsen, who died recently at the age of 84.

Olsen, who most recently lived in Cary, N.C., died Nov. 20. Funeral services were held on Nov. 23.

During the 35 years Olsen lived in Palatine, he served on numerous boards and commissions. Most notably, Olsen was Palatine's village president from 1957 to 1961. He served as Palatine Township supervisor between 1965 and 1981.

"He did have a lifetime commitment to public service," said Beverly Langstrom, Olsen's daughter. "Serving and helping others was a big thing to him."

Olsen also was president of the local Lions Club chapter, Boy Scout troop leader, Sunday school teacher, president of the Northwest Municipal Conference, trustee of Northwest Community Hospital and trustee at Harper College in Palatine.

The senior members of the Palatine village council have fond memories of Olsen. They passed a proclamation Monday in his honor.

Councilman Jim Wilson described Olsen as someone who personified a civic leader, while Councilman Warren Kostka recalled how happy Olsen was to see people get involved in the village.

"You (serve in a local elected office) because you want to see the betterment of your community," said Rita Mullins, current Palatine mayor.

Son Brian Olsen said that his father never shortchanged his family while giving back to his community.

"His goal was to have his children be better off than he was," Langstrom said. …
