GIE Turnout Surprises. (the Buzz)

The tragic events of Sept. 11 and the aftershocks did not slow down attendance at either the Green Industry Expo or the annual conferences of the Professional Lawn Care Association of America (PLCAA) and the Associated Landscape Contractors of America (ALCA).

"In fact, attendance figures were in line with past shows," says PLCAA Executive Vice President Tom Delaney. 'Our job was to not slow down the show but keep it running with added sessions and opportunities for lawn-care professionals to interact, and [to] encourage each other during these trying times. PLCAA held a special Town Hall Meeting to help our attendees deal with issues, particularly economic ones, associated with the 'national crisis' theme of the meeting. We were pleased with the turnout and the overall mentality of our attendees."

ALCA, meanwhile, had a record turnout.

"At a time when many associations are canceling their annual meetings, we were particularly pleased to have such a large, enthusiastic crowd," says ALCA Executive Vice President Debra Holder. ALCA had more full-conference registrants than prior years.

Attendees cited a wide variety of reasons for attending the annual meeting with the majority stating that they were anxious to "demonstrate support for the industry" and "continue with day-to-day living. …
