St. Peter Vikings Boys Do Well in Big West Playoffs

Queen of Rosary 30, Vikings 27: St. Peter Vikings sixth/seventh- grade boys basketball team faced rival Queen of the Rosary Cougars in the Big West playoffs on March 12. In a hard-fought, down-to- the-wire game, the Vikings came up short, losing to the Cougars 30- 27.

The Vikings gave up 7 points before they got on the board in the first quarter, but then came back strong, scoring 6 unanswered points of their own on two baskets by Colin Tobin and one by Ben Stell. On defense, Mike Laughlin, Joe Kryger, Tobin and Stell contributed with steals and rebounds.

A Cougar basket at the end of the quarter gave Queen of the Rosary a 9-6 lead. Matt Durbin was the Vikings big scorer in the second half, sinking three baskets and a free throw. Stell added another basket. Tim Frawley assisted the Vikings with a steal. The half ended with the Vikings trailing 20-15.

The third quarter saw the Vikings cut Queen of the Rosary's lead to 3 on baskets by Durbin (2) and Tobin. Defensive efforts that included a steal by Kurt Herrmann held the Cougars to only 4 points.

St. Peter took advantage of the Cougars foul problems in the fourth quarter as Mike Aument sunk 2 free throws and Tobin and Durbin each added one. Stell added the Vikings' only basket of the quarter. The Cougars managed to keep pace with the Viking scoring, pulling out a 30-27 victory.

Vikings 31, St. Charles Borromreo 18: St. Peter Vikings boys basketball team walked off with a victory when they faced the St. Charles Borromeo Crusaders on March 6 in their first playoff game in the Big West. After dominating the first quarter, the Vikings gradually increased their margin, leading to the 31-18 victory.

The Vikings won the opening tip and proceeded to put 9 points up in the first quarter while only allowing the Crusaders one free throw. Ben Stell kept the Crusaders off balance with his steals and rebounds. Colin Tobin, Matt Durbin and Stell put the Vikings on the scoreboard early with their scoring in the first quarter.

Stell put up three more baskets in the second quarter, maintaining the Vikings lead, 15-6, at halftime. Kurt Herrmann sunk two long baskets in the third quarter. Stell added two more, as the Vikings began to pull away.

The fourth quarter saw Mike Aument and Tim Frawley each add two baskets for the Vikings. Steals by Chris Miller and Tobin and rebounds by Mike Laughlin, Tobin and Aument held the Crusaders in check and sealed the 31-18 victory.

St. Walters 29, Vikings 16: St. Peter Vikings boys got off to a slow start March 2 in their last regular season game in the Big West League. St. Walter Spartan B team's lead was too large for the Vikings to close in a fourth-quarter drive.

St. Walter dominated the first half, scoring 19 points. Tim Frawley put the Vikings on the scoreboard with his single basket. Chris Miller, Michelangelo Scafidi and Kurt Herrmann tried to hold the Spartans in check by stealing the ball and breaking up their offensive drives.

The Vikings began their drive late in the third quarter on baskets by Mike Aument and Frawley. John Liberto contributed a steal.

The fourth quarter saw the Vikings take off. Frawley scored two more baskets. Mike Laughlin added a basket to the Vikings total, while Miller sunk two free throws and Herrmann one. St. Peter held the Spartans to only 9 points in the second half.

Crusaders 32, Vikings 18: St. Peter Vikings boys basketball team paced the Divine Providence Crusaders through three quarters in their playoff game Feb. 24 in the St. John Vianney League. The Crusaders pulled away in the fourth quarter to win the game, 32-18.

With only five players, the Vikings pulled within one point by the end of the first half after being down by as many as 7. Divine Providence began its run late in the third quarter before dominating the game in the final quarter.

Ben Stell was the Vikings only scorer, accounting for all 18 Vikings points. …
