BORN on April 5, 1947, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo comes from an illustrious clan, a descendant of Lakandula. More immediately, she is the daughter of the late President Diosdado P. Macapagal, the Chief Executive in the years from 1961 to 1965, who was responsible for the Philippines' sustained growth during that period and who left a legacy of integrity in government and simple living at the highest level.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo graduated valedictorian of her high school class at the Assumption Convent. She graduated magna cum laude from Assumption College with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce. She was consistently on the Dean's List during her two-year graduate stint at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. She later earned a Master of Arts degree in Economics from the Ateneo de Manila University, and a Doctorate in Economics from the University of the Philippines (UP).

After the democratic transition of EDSA I, the future president of the country plunged into her first taste of public service when she served as an Undersecretary of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) during the Aquino Administration.
