Looking for a few extra nickels to rub together? You're not alone. No matter if you are single, head of a growing household, or an empty-nester, saving money is important to nearly all of us.

Finding the good products and services that you need, but at a discounted price, is one way to do it. Oftentimes all it takes is making a few adjustments to your normal routine to find a restaurant, store, activity or attraction that will save you a few bucks along the way.

Here are a few local spots to check out if you are looking to stretch your dollar a little further:

Colonial Cafe: If you are an older adult you can get senior citizen discounts at many eating establishments, but if you have little ones, what about a break for your kids?

Stop by the Colonial Cafe restaurants in St. Charles on Monday nights between 5 and 8 p.m. and any children in your party eat free with a paying adult. Even better, they provide free clown entertainment, and the guy with the big red nose stops by each table to make individual balloon creations that your kids can take home.

Colonial Cafe East is at 1625 E. Main St., and Colonial Cafe West at is at 2036 Lincoln Hwy.

Metra: If you live in the Tri-Cities but have to travel to work somewhere in the Western suburbs or into downtown Chicago, forego the car.

Even if you do not have a car payment, just the insurance, gasoline and maintenance costs associated with owning a vehicle can cost you thousands each year. Taking the train to work, even if you have to connect with a Pace bus to get you to your final destination, saves money. …
