Des Plaines community activist Gloria Keane and CoVest Banc are bringing back the Classic, Antique & Custom Car Show this summer.

Keane, a longtime member of the city's special events commission until earlier this year, said she's forging ahead with the show, just not as a member of the commission.

Keane, with the help of the special events commission, and CoVest started the show last summer.

This year, the show will be from 6 to 9 p.m. starting May 16 in the CoVest parking lot, 749 Lee St., Des Plaines. Other dates are June 20, July 18, Aug. 15 and Sept. 19.

"The bank wanted me to continue the car show," she said.

The show was a popular draw to downtown Des Plaines attracting hundreds of spectators and cars. The last of the series of shows last summer attracted nearly 170 cars.

"The mayor gave me carte blanche to use whatever facilities we needed from the city," Keane said. "We have all our soldiers in place."

Besides the cars, there will be coupons from local merchants and refreshments. Admission is free.

New Memorial Day plans: This year, Des Plaines veterans organizations are trying something new for Memorial Day. One of the new aspects is this year's keynote speaker, Pat Maravola, who is a two-tour Vietnam veteran nurse.

The ceremony will start at 10 a.m. this year around the band shell at Lake Opeka, Howard Avenue and Lee Street, with coffee, juice and donuts. The Maine West High School band will play during that time. At 11 a.m. the main ceremony starts with guest speakers, including Maravola, and wreath-laying.

As in previous years, veterans also will visit area cemeteries and senior homes to honor other veterans. …
