THIS is the latest vision of the new pounds 30 million fast track hospital centre which is set to open in Birmingham in just two years' time. The new outpatient diagnosis and treatment centre at City Hospital is set to slash waiting times for minor surgery and enable some patients to be treated in just one visit.

The Dudley Road unit will be the first of its kind in the UK with facilities including:

Six surgery theatres for short-stay operations A dedicated cancer centre

A kidney dialysis unit

A breast unit for screening and diagnosis

An endoscopy unit for digestive disorders

Fast track diagnosis facilities for X-rays, scans and physical tests

A pharmacy Dr Tariq Iqbal, consultant gastroenterologist who is involved in developing the centre, said: 'The new centre will enable patients to have fast track diagnosis and in some cases treatment in just one visit.

'We will no longer expect patients to trail around endless corridors to access the different areas for their care, because the new centre has been designed so that relevant facilities are located near to each other. …
