VICTORIOUS coach Bruce Arena hailed the USA's victory over Portugal as the best result in the country's history - better than that famous win over England in the 1950 World Cup. More than half a century ago it was Tom Finney and Billy Wright who were humbled. This time it was world player of the year Luis Figo and AC Milan's Rui Costa on the receiving end.

And Arena believes the United States need live off the memory of 1950 in Brazil no longer.

``In the modern era, this is even bigger than that game against England,'' he said.

If 1950 was a fluke - and there are many who insist it was not - this game was anything but, as Portugal melted in the sultry heat of Suwon.

John O'Brien, Landon Donovan and Brian McBride were the all-American heroes, and the victory should at least get some coverage in a country currently obsessed with the NBA basketball play-offs.
