President Arroyo assured the nation yesterday that adequate security and safety measures have been set up to allow Filipino Christians to observe the Christmas season this year peacefully and safely.

The President made the assurance in her radio message to the nation as she reiterated that "peace on earth and goodwill towards men" remains the true message and spirit of Christmas that the whole Christendom is about to celebrate in the next few days.

"Tungkulin ko at ng ating pamahalaan na siguruhing maging mapayapa ang pagdiriwang ng dakilang araw na ito. Kaya naman pinulong ko kamakailan ang mga pinuno ng ating Hukbong Sandatahan at kapulisan upang alamin ang kanilang security preparations," she said.

"Tiniyak sa akin ng ating pulis at military officials ang kanilang kahandaang pangalagaan ang ating kaligtasan mula sa terorismo, krimen at iba pang banta sa peace and order ngayong holiday season," she added.

About 17,000 policemen have been deployed in Metro Manila to keep peace and order in crowded areas such as shopping malls, commercial centers, public transportation like the Light Rail Transit, and other crucial government offices.

Some transportation officials will also be deployed by Transportation and Communications Secretary Leandro Mendoza in bus terminals in Metro Manila to ensure that those who will spend the Christmas break in the provinces will have a pleasant and safe trip, the President said.

According to her, these transportation officials will also check on the operators and drivers of public utility vehicles to prevent the overcharging of Yule vacationers.

"Maglalagay ang DoTC (Department of Transportation and Communications) ng complaint desk sa mga malls para tumanggap ng reklamo at tulungan ang mga pasaherong nabiktima ng mga abusadong tsuper," she said, adding that the DoTC has coordianted such campaign with the police authorities.

The President also assured that traffic enforcers have been deployed in most congested areas in Metro Manila to direct traffic during the holidays and check on the baggages of travelers to the provinces to thwart any terrorist bombing.

She also called on the citizens to cooperate with police and military authorities against groups out to destroy the holiday celebration with their terrorist activities. …
