Taulava, Pena Suspended; for Traces of Marijuana in Test

With the 2003 PBA season barely started, Commissioner Noli Eala lowered the boom on two Fil-Americans after slight traces of marijuana were discovered in tests.

Asi Taulava of Talk N Text and Dorian Pena of San Miguel Beer were assessed two-game suspensions each after PBA physician Dr. Benedicto Salud submitted his report to the Commissioners office.

We have today suspended Asi Taulava of Talk N Text and Dorian Pena of San Miguel Beer for two games each after they were found to have slight traces of marijuana following tests conducted by PBA physician Dr. Benedicto L. Salud and subsequently validated by the Philippine National Police Crime laboratory, Eala announced hours before the second playdate of the league at the PhilSports Arena.

We have also required both Taulava and Pena to be tested before every game for the rest of the ongoing all Filipino Cup. Eala said adding that any second violation of PBA rules on the use of prohibited drugs would result in a 45-day suspension while a third offense would mean a lifetime ban from playing in the league.

Eala said the rules shall be applied to all players without prejudice to existing rules covering imports.

Eala, however, said that the two got light sentences after tests conducted on subsequent urine samples by the Philippine National Police Crime Laboratory proved to be negative. …
