East Drill Teams Busy Winning, Performing, Teaching Others

The St. Charles East High School drill teams carried home an abundance of first-place trophies from the Illinois Drill Team Association competitions in February.

At Hononegah High School in Rockton on Feb. 15, varsity was awarded first place in the lyrical and pom dance categories and second place in the funk and dance categories.

The junior varsity team received first place for its dance routine, "Total Eclipse of the Heart," and first place in funk for "East-Side Remix."

Varsity won first place in all its categories Feb. 22 at Downers Grove North High School: lyrical for "Movin' On"; funk for "Stomp 'n' Grind"; dance for "He's A Dream"; and pom dance for "Shake A Tail Feather."

The junior varsity team earned second place for its pom dance, "We Got the Beat," as well as second place in the dance category.

Earlier in February, varsity drill team members participated in Munhall Elementary School's enrichment program.

Juniors Tracey Rubendall and Cassie Russett led dance classes for first- through fifth-graders, similar to the team's communitywide kids' clinic held every June at the high school.

The varsity team finished off the month by performing at St. Charles East High School's home basketball game on Feb. 25.

The nine seniors on the team entertained spectators with a number specially choreographed for the evening, and a commemorative booklet featured their reflections about high school and the drill team. …
