Recruiting Heats Up for Norwin Athletes

As temperatures begin to peak in Western Pennsylvania, things are heating up everywhere, including the recruiting trail for a couple of Norwin athletes.

Tyler Urban and Mike Shanahan each received big football offers during the past couple of weeks.

Urban got offers from West Virginia, Maryland and Indiana to go along with his nine from Mid-American Conference teams, while Shanahan picked up offers from Georgia Tech, West Virginia, Vanderbilt, Delaware, Duke, Indiana and Stanford.

Shanahan, who made an unofficial visit to Michigan this week for basketball, has hoop offers from Lehigh, Robert Morris, Akron and the Air Force Academy. He said he expects to hear from Michigan coach John Beilein next week. He's not sure if he'll receive an offer from Beilein, who recruited Shanahan when he was at West Virginia.

"Michigan may extend a basketball offer," Shanahan said, "and I may get a few more after coaches see me playing AAU basketball in July. I'm not sure if I'll receive any more football offers."

Most coaches are recruiting Shanahan as a wide receiver. Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt are looking at the 6-foot-5, 210-pound senior as a safety.

"It's been fun, but at the same time a burden," Shanahan said. ""I'm probably going to choose a sport in July. I'm not sure when I'll commit.

"I'd like to go to a school that will give me the opportunity to play as a freshman, and I'm comfortable with the head coach. …
