Q&A with WVU Quarterback Pat White

West Virginia ranks among the preseason favorites to win the national title, based on a dynamic rushing attack led by quarterback Pat White.

After only 17 career starts, White already owns the Big East career rushing record for a quarterback with 2,171 yards. He ran for 18 touchdowns last season and threw for 13 more to become the Big East Offensive Player of the Year.

Q: Does West Virginia have what it takes to be No. 1, in your opinion?

A: You have to feel you're the best when you step out there on the field. Every day, we have to play, think, act, eat and sleep like we're the best team in America. From what we've done, to how hard some of our workouts are, we'll definitely be ready. It's been a long winter, spring and summer, and I can't wait for the season to start. It's our goal to be the best, and if we don't get there, it will be a disappointing season.

Q: Do you and your close friend, running back Steve Slaton, talk about the fact you might be competing for the Heisman Trophy?

A: It's not really a topic we bring up too often. Right now, we're just trying to have fun and enjoy our season. …
