WINNING BIG: Entering Saturday's game, West Virginia's average margin of victory in its last 23 season-opening wins has been 28.3 points. The Mountainers have posted an all time-record of 21-6 in season openers after going to a bowl game.

LEADING THE WAY: Kicker Pat McAfee, linebacker Mortty Ivy, left tackle Ryan Stanchek and tight end Sammy Marrone served as West Virginia's captains, which are selected on a game-by-game basis. North Hills graduate David Dalessandro served as a team captain for Villanova.

SITTING OUT: West Virginia linebacker Reed Williams sat out yesterday with a shoulder injury. Stewart said he "will be close to playing next week, if not playing."

BIG LEG: West Virginia's McAfee converted a career-long 52 yard field goal. The kick tied for the fourth longest field goal in West Virginia history. McAfee's previous long was a 51-yard boot at Heinz Field. McAfee entered this season as West Virginia's leading scorer and the Big East's second-leading scorer.

ROOTING AGAINST PITT, MICHIGAN: Villanova running back Aaron Ball rushed 5 yards for a first down and then a loud cheer erupted at Mountaineer Field. The fans weren't rooting for Villanova early in the first quarter. Rather, the final Pitt score had just flashed on the college scoreboard, and Mountaineer fans applauded, as they realized the Panthers lost their season opener to Bowling Green. …
