Ohlendorf Solid in Pirates' Win over Reds

Ross Ohlendorf turned in another sharp performance Monday in a 3- 2 victory against the Cincinnati Reds.

Ohlendorf went 5.1 innings and allowed a run on three hits and two walks and struck out three.

"I'm really excited about the (regular) season, but I'm still getting things out of these games," said Ohlendorf, whose spring ERA is 0.87. "I want to show them why I feel I deserve to be in the rotation. I want to make their decision look good."

The Pirates acquired left-handed pitcher Shawn Nottingham from Cleveland for a player to be named. He likely will begin the season at Double-A Altoona.

The departure of Brian Bixler, combined with Andy Phillips' late start due to a sore back, could give Luis Cruz the final bench job.

"Luis has the inside track at this time, but it's not a done deal," general manager Neal Huntington said.

Bixler will start at shortstop for Triple-A Indianapolis but also will spell Shelby Ford a day or two each week at second base.

"(Bixler) might have our best pivot as a second baseman on the double play," Huntington said. …
