FIRST PERIOD

PENGUINS 0, RED WINGS 0

HIGHLIGHT: The Penguins narrowly missed two scoring opportunities in the ninth minute, when RW Tyler Kennedy shot wide from the right side. Kennedy got the rebound behind the boards and fed a pass to C Jordan Staal, whose point-blank shot from the lower left circle was blocked.

LOWLIGHT: Detroit D Brad Stuart was called for slashing C Evgeni Malkin at 11:24, but the Penguins failed to capitalize on the ensuing power play. The Red Wings twice cleared the puck from their zone, and the Penguins registered only one shot on goal, a wrister by C Sidney Crosby from the right circle as the penalty expired.

KEY STAT: Detroit won 11 of 14 faceoffs, as C Valtteri Filppula was 5-0 and C Henrik Zetterberg 4-0 on draws for the Red Wings.

BEST HIT: Detroit D Niklas Kronwall lowered a shoulder into Penguins LW Max Talbot in the neutral zone, knocking Talbot off balance in the 10th minute and drawing a roar from Red Wings fans. Kronwall registered five hits for the Wings, who outhit the Penguins, 21-12.

HIGHLIGHT: C Max Talbot scored twice to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead, slipping a five-hole shot past G Chris Osgood at 1:13, when C Evgeni Malkin deflected D Brad Stuart's pass from the boards. And Talbot a top-shelf wrist shot from the left circle on a 2-on-1 breakaway at 10:07.
