Trib Journalists Pick Up Top Awards in Competitions

Trib Total Media journalists won a dozen first-place awards in competitions sponsored by the Pennsylvania chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and the Pennsylvania Women's Press Association.

Mary Ann Thomas of The Herald in Aspinwall won second place in the Spotlight Award competition, the Society of Professional Journalists' most prestigious award, for "Freedom Of Speech In Blawnox." In addition, The Trib won third place in the Best Overall Daily Newspaper category.

In Society of Professional Journalists competition among daily papers, Trib award winners were:

Feature writing: Chris Togneri, first place for "Not In Our Lifetime."

Sports: Bob Frye, first place for "Minorities Missing From Outdoors," and Scott Brown, third place for "Lifting Spirits."

News Photography: Andrew Russell, first place for "Candles, Prayer and Hope" and third place for "Not In Our Lifetime."

Photo Story: Andrew Russell, first place for "An Unbreakable Bond" and second place for "High Tech Hope Arises From Waste."

Environmental Reporting: Andrew Conte and Timothy Puko, first place for "Drilling Down: Marcellus Shale."

Enterprise Reporting: Brad Bumsted and Debra Erdley, second place for "Critics: Judges' Luxury Cars Slap at Taxpayers."

Business/Labor Reporting: Amy Crawford, second place for "Nemacolin Bolsters Staff With Foreign Workers."

Web Use: Trib P.M./Multimedia Team, second place for "What's Killing Pittsburghers."

Web Design: Michele Johnston, Sewickley Herald, second place for "YourSewickley.com."
