500 Violence and Sex Crimes near to Lapdancing Clubs

MORE than 500 violent offences and sexual crimes, including rape and robbery, have taken place within close proximity of Birmingham lapdancing clubs in the last year.

But West Midlands Police said just ten of the crimes were directly linked to the venues, in a report to the city council.

The force revealed the crime figures to the authority before it reviews its Sexual Entertainment Venue policy at a meeting today.

Officers recorded 90 cases of actual bodily harm within 50m of the nine lapdance clubs in the city between March 1, 2013 and February 28 this year. There were also seven sexual assaults, three rapes and 29 incidents of malicious wounding.

In total there were 253 violent crimes and 265 sexual crimes withing 50m of the nine clubs, of which only eight and two respectively were directly attributable to the venues.

A Sexual Entertainment Venue (SEV) includes lapdancing, pole dancing and table dancing clubs, as well as strip shows, peep shows and live sex shows.

A spokesman for the Birmingham Community Safety Partnership Violence Against Women and Children Steering Group called for a "zero tolerance" policy on SEVs ahead of the meeting. …
