Grand Opening

AUSTIN.... There is cause for celebration in Austin this month, as the Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art welcomes visitors to its brand new state-of-the-art facility on April 30. While construction continues on the museum's Education and Visitor Pavilion (completion is expected in late 2006 or early 2007), the Mari and James A. Michener Gallery Building is open for business and now houses the Blanton's world-class permanent collection of more than 17,000 works of art. Among the exhibitions on view in the new 124,000-square-foot building are the Suida-Manning Collection of Renaissance and Baroque Art, the C.R. Smith Collection of Art of the American West, the Michener Collection of 20th-century American Art, and the Barbara Duncan Collection of Latin American Art.

Lone Star Showcase

FREDERICKSBURG.... Whistle Pik Galleries pays tribute to artists hailing from Texas this month with its Annual Texas Review April 21-May 6. Among the 20 participating painters and sculptors are Wayne Baize, John Cook, Larry Dyke, Brian Grimm [see page 22], John Austin Hanna, G. Harvey, Mark Haworth, William J. Kalwick Jr. [see page 44], Sonya Terpening, and Gene Zesch. Meet the artists at a reception on Saturday, April 29, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Plein Air Texas

DALLAS.... Featuring members of the Outdoor Painters Society and guest artists from across the country, the inaugural Plein Air Texas event kicks off with a Paint Out in the Dallas area April 8-13, followed by a Quick Draw at Dallas Heritage Park on Saturday, April 15. An exhibition of works created during the event hangs at The Victorian Gallery April 15-May 15, with an artists' reception on April 15. Approximately 50 artists participate in the show, including David Moreland Bates, Beverly Boren, Kaye Franklin, Linda Glover Gooch, Ann Hardy, Rusty Jones, Bruce Peil, John Pototschnick, Bob Rohm, Ann Templeton, and Andrew Wages.

AIS Exhibit

ROCKPORT.... The American Impressionist Society's National Juried Exhibition takes place April 5-May 6 at the Rockport Center for the Arts. The show features more than 100 impressionistic paintings by members of the Florida-based group. Last year's award winners included Kathleen Newman, Scott Harding, Nancy Ellington, Rick Howell, Debra Huse, and Walt Gonske.

On Location

DALLAS.... On view at Valley House Gallery through April 22 is a collection of recent paintings by New York-based Henry Finkelstein. The exhibition comprises plein-air landscapes of Maine and Brittany, France. Finklestein studied at the Yale School of Art and received a Fulbright Grant to study in Italy in 1984. He teaches at the National Academy of Design in New York.
