Beautiful Surroundings

SCOTTSDALE.... New scenic paintings by Utah artist Kent R. Wallis are on display at The Danela/May Galleries at The Borgata. Featuring landscapes from Wallis' travels to the English and Italian countryside, the summer compositions are warm and nostalgic. A reception for the artist is scheduled for June 23.

Surprise Museum Opening

SURPRISE.... Enthusiasts of Phoenix's prestigious Heard Museum can look forward to the opening of a satellite location in the suburb of Surprise. The Heard Museum West focuses on Arizona's diverse native cultures. Among the more than 300 objects displayed in the first long-term exhibit, Our Stories: American Indian Art and Culture in Arizona, are numerous examples of traditional and contemporary tribal art. Landscape artwork and artists' portraits are also on display. The Heard West is designed with classrooms for youth activities and continuing education programs, as well as a spacious exterior for outdoor sculpture, festivals, and demonstrations. Visitors can also buy authentic Native artwork from the museum shop. Plans for the June 24 grand opening celebration include music and dance performances, artists' demonstrations, and hands-on activities for children. The museum opening is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is free to the public. The Heard Museum West is the second satellite location of the famous Arizona museum. The Heard Museum North is located in Scottsdale.

Summer Watercolor

SEDONA.... Colorado artist Homare Ikeda is the focus of a month-long show at Lanning Gallery. The Japanese-born Ikeda is known for his oils and etchings, but this show features his contemporary mixedmedia watercolors. In this series, the artist integrates pen and ink into the paintings. An opening reception for Ikeda takes place on June 2 from 5 to 8 p.m. as part of the Sedona Gallery Association's "First Friday-Evening in the Galleries" event. …
