Drawing a Crowd

A multi-gallery event celebrates the art of drawing in pencil, charcoal, and more

SCOTTSDALE * Five local galleries are joining together this month for the second annual Scottsdale Drawing Event. "There is something seductive about this medium," says organizer Beth Lauterbach of Scottsdale Fine Art. "Drawings give viewers the opportunity to view the foundation skills essential to all artists," In addition to Scottsdale Fine Art, the other participating galleries are Duley-Jones Gallery, Gallery Russia, Joan CawJey Gallery, and, new this year, Legacy Gallery. "This is a wonderful opportunity for us to bring yet another tremendous medium to our viewing authence," says Scott Jones of Legacy Gallery.

Most of the artists are known primarily for their paintings, though a few choose pencils or charcoal as their main mediums. Among the featured artists are Allen Garns, Michael Maczuga, Laura Mitchell, Alicia Lang, Regina Lyubovnaya, Marci Oleszkiewicz, Russell Cracker, Michael Swearngin, and Marina Dieul. A 64-page, soft-cover book with drawings by the artists can be purchased at the galleries. The Scottsdale Drawing Event kicks off October 14, when the galleries hold open houses from 7 to 9 p.m. in conjunction with the Scottsdate art district's Thursday night ArtWalk. Scenes from the Coast

PORT ARANSAS * Mark October 14-16 on your calendar for the fourth annual Port Aransas Coastal Paint-Out, Artists from throughout Texas fan UUL along the 14 miles of Mustang Island to capture its beaches, boats, harbors, seascapes, shoreline, and more. Participating artists include Rusty Jones, LaNeIl Arndt, Christy Kidwell, Roy Murray, Sarah Searight, Carolyn Cobb, Bob Rohm, and Chase Almond. A Quick Draw takes place Saturday morning, and later that day there is a show and reception from 4 to 7 p.m. at Port A Gallery, where winners are announced and the public gets to vote on the People's Choice Award. American Women Artists

DALLAS * The National Juried Competition and Members1 Exhibition of American Women Artists takes place this month at Southwest Gallery. The competition is open to AWA signature members and master signature members. Jurors for this year's competition are master signature members Karen Vanee, Darlis Lamb, and Kirn Casebeer, along with art writer Susan Hallsten McGarry and Bob Malenfant, the owner of Southwest Gallery.
