Profanities bring charge

POLICE have charged a Manitoba teen with a criminal offence for allegedly spewing swear words in school.

Staff at Crocus Plains Regional Secondary school in Brandon called police to report the 17-year-old boy's behaviour on Monday after lunch.

Police say the teen had been screaming and yelling profanities.

He was removed from the building and charged with causing a disturbance by swearing, then released from custody to a parent.

Sgt. Mike Pelechaty said the charge is more typically used when people cause disturbances by fighting or being drunk. "In this case, I guess the officer felt this charge was appropriate."

Pelechaty said he's not aware of what the teen's tirade was about.

A spokeswoman for the Brandon School Division said the student was "in distress" and it became necessary to call police. The youth is to appear in court in April.

Big tax bill unexpected

A Winnipeg woman has been told by the city she owes 10 years worth of unpaid taxes, which she says she thought she had paid.

Kathleen Carpenter is facing an $18,000 bill dating back to 2003.

A clerical error meant another person was charged Carpenter's property taxes on top of their own.

Carpenter has five years to pay the outstanding bill but isn't sure how she can come up with an extra $300 a month on top of her regular payments.

She was laid off in November and has not found work.

The city says it can't comment on specific cases, but adds it's rare for unpaid taxes to go unnoticed.

Street contracts approved

A series of contracts has been approved for the twinning and reconstruction of a major route through North Kildonan and East Kildonan.

A special meeting of the public works committee approved the $6.4 million in contracts with Bayview Construction for a major upgrade to a stretch of Molson Street/Panet Road.

Public works director Brad Sacher said while the city has not yet acquired ownership of several strips of land from adjacent property owners, there is enough city-owned land for Bayview to begin work immediately. …
