The Annual Convention of the Sri Lanka Branch was held very successfully at the end of March at the Hotel Taj Samudra, Colombo. The chief guest was the Hon C V Gooneratne, the Minister of Industrial Development.

He thanked the Institute of Management Services, Sri Lanka branch for coming forward to support the efforts of the government to raise the levels of productivity, quality assurance and reliability in Sri Lanka. "Being one of Sri lanka's urgent and prime needs, a productivity decade was launched to climax in the year 2006 and the cooperation of everyone has been sought to make a success of this ongoing decade-long drive. Many academic and professional institutions have responded to the call of the government and to this list we can proudly add the name of the Institute of Management Services Sri Lanka branch who bring in special expertise" he said.

Mr Gooneratne acknowledged the IMS as one of the foremost institutions in UK involved in the promotion of productivity and quality, and was happy to note that the Sri Lanka branch had organised the convention to enable several speakers to make presentations on important techniques and experience connected to productivity improvement.

"I have noted a resurgence of many industrial engineering techniques in the highly competitive areas of our economy and the Institute's role in assuring quality of its practitioners of these techniques through its examination and membership structure is well appreciated. …
