A carrot to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina for giving its members discounted access to a huge range of alternative services. And we're not just talking about chiropractic and acupuncture. Members also receive discounts of up to 25 percent off such previously non-covered services as gym memberships and spa visits (e.g., massages, facials, hydrotherapy). It's nice to see some providers putting the "care" back in health care.

A stick to the Canadian publication Health Naturally for its recent article "The Myths of Vegetarianism." The piece states that meat consumption does not contribute to the depletion of the earth's natural resources; that meat eaters do not have higher rates of heart disease, cancer, obesity and osteoporosis than vegetarians; and that soy products are not adequate substitutes for meat and dairy products. The author's conclusion is the most egregious of all: "When it comes to good nutrition, it's best to stick with the tried and true, rather than the untested and new. …
