From our new Chairman John Lucey

Annual General Meeting

The Institute's 38th AGM was held at the Institute's Head Office at Stowe House, Lichfield on Friday 3 October 2003. Presiding at the meeting, Institute Chairman, Harry Downes, confirmed that a quorum was present and moved the meeting to business, where the following resolutions were approved.

Resolution 1

To receive the annual report and financial statements for 2002.

Resolution 2

To approve the increase in membership subscription rates for year 2004. The rates applicable for 2004 for all employed members within the European Union (including the UK) will be L99.00. For members unemployed at 1 January 2004 and for retired members (aged 60 or over) the membership fee will be L50.00. The fee for overseas members will be L75. A discount rate of L50.00 will apply to members from designated special promotion countries overseas.

Resolution 3

To appoint Leftley Rowe and Company as auditors for the Institute accounts for the current financial year.

Having concluded the official business the Chairman invited members present to participate in an informal discussion on matters concerning the IMS.

A lively discussion followed which concluded with the Chairman thanking all those who attended for their comments and stating that he felt very optimistic about the future. He said "The Institute is financially sound and has a 'hard core' of very committed members."

The Council of Management meeting followed on directly from the AGM.

Council of Management Meeting

The Chairman welcomed Council members to the meeting and and congratulated David Blanchflower on his re-appointment to Council together with Dick Bridges and Ron Leeman on their appointments. (Ron Leeman was unfortunately unable to attend this meeting and sent his apologies).

The chairman also took this opportunity to thank both John Hopkinson and Geoff Mansfield, for their service to Council during their recent tenure of office.

Matters arising from the AGM

The five main points from the debate at the AGM were tabled and discussed. These included Membership Cards, Diaries, Regional Grants, the appointment of Council Delegates to the Regions, and the Institute Archives - currently held at Warwick University. …
