Bold Gouaches

SEATTLE, WA.... Lisa Harris Gallery features new paintings by Richard Morhous this month. This is the first time that Morhous has devoted an entire exhibition to major works in gouache. The Seattle-based artist usually reserves the medium for small works. Morhous' boldly colored paintings draw on memories from favorite cities such as Seattle, San Francisco, and Sydney, Australia. His works feature rich, interlocking patterns while exploring artistic concerns of form, line, and color. Meet the artist at a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on February 1.

Inspired by Beauty

PORTLAND, OR.... Mitch Baird believes that painting is a celebration of the beauty that surrounds us every day. This month Yoshida's Fine Art Gallery features new works by the young Oregon-based painter. Baird, 33, says he is devoted to the traditions of the late 19th-century artists who looked to the figure and nature for inspiration. He works directly from life to capture the nuances of natural light and color harmonies. His artistic mission is to make a positive visual statement so that viewers may experience what he sees and be uplifted and moved by his paintings, he says.

Nuances of Light

SEATTLE, WA.... Davidson Contemporary presents new landscape paintings by Leslie Williams Cain this month. Cain's pastels depict the openness and peacefulness of the eastern Washington landscape. Cain, who lives and works in the region, captures the character of the terrain and the light patterns in different seasons with an intimate understanding. Through the use of lively brushstrokes, the trees and fields in a Cain scene often feature dancing lines conveying the freedom she experiences when encountering the area's natural beauty.
