The composition of the troposphere, the lowest part of the atmosphere that supports all life on Earth, began to change significantly around the beginning of the century. In more ways than one, our study begins at the same time. In one sense, this book is about the atmosphere. In another sense, it is about life, our lives, the lives of the four generations of families that have spanned this time frame.

In 1906, our grandparents immigrated to the United States from Poland to seek a better life. First came William, who when arriving in this country took the name of the city in Poland from which he came— Kalisz, which was anglicized to Kalish. Then came his wife, Nettie.
