THIS is a book about living fully, loving, caring, creating, and adventuring. It focuses on the human problem of death and on the extraordinary capacity of ordinary persons to face—with sensitivity, integrity, and dignity— their own deaths or the deaths of those they care about. This book has emerged from an effort to understand the human costs that are the dark side of today's cure‐ oriented, technological medical culture, and from direct, everyday experience of the modern hospice as a humane and compassionate form of terminal care. The hospice approach creates a context where it is possible for one to live while dying. In such a context, intimacy with death heightens one's potential for discovering the meaning of life.
