This book arises out of two experiences on the part of the author. For the past several years (1965-68) I have been engaged in a scientific study of the male homosexual community in the San Francisco Bay Area, under a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health. The more I have studied male homosexuality the more I have become impressed with its seriousness as a social problem; it is perhaps the most serious undiscussed problem in the United States today.
