Excerpt

These selections from the manuscript diary of William Gardiner Hammond picturing the life of an Amherst undergraduate from 1846 to 1848 are published by the authority of the Board of Trustees of Amherst College as one item in a program designed to mark the one hundred and twenty-fifth anniversary of the College.

Permission to publish has been granted by Miss Juliet Hammond, daughter and only surviving child of Chancellor Hammond, who has also given invaluable assistance and advice while this book was in course of preparation.

Since a copy of the complete diary was in the first instance presented by Miss Hammond to the Law Library of the State University of Iowa, President King, on behalf of the Amherst trustees, requested the dean of the Iowa College of Law to secure an official vote of his faculty giving their consent to the projected publication. The immediate and courteous response was the resolution which follows:

Resolved, that the Faculty of the College of Law of the State University of Iowa hereby grants permission to the Trustees of Amherst College to arrange for the publication of such sections of the diary of William Gardiner Hammond--which diary is now on deposit in the library of the College of Law--as deal with his life as an Amherst undergraduate.

In a vote expressing their deep appreciation for this permission to publish, the Amherst Board added as a matter of record:

The Board of Trustees of Amherst College recognize that the permission granted by the Faculty of the State University of Iowa in no way restricts the State University of Iowa from publishing at some future time the whole or any part of the Hammond diary.
