The chapters which follow represent the Bampton Lectures in America delivered at Columbia University in July, 1954. Since the lectures had to be prepared on very short notice, I was allowed the privilege of revising, and at the same time measurably expanding, them before submitting them for publication. The task I had set myself in the first instance was the comparatively humble one of attempting to survey the considerable body of recent thought and writing concerning revelation. What I had in mind might be described as an extended review. If in the event I have written something in the nature of an independent essay, I have certainly done no more than that. Had a full systematic treatment been intended, many other questions must necessarily have been raised.

Not all the recent books which were in my mind or in my hand as I wrote have been specifically cited in the text, but most of them are in the list which I have appended.
