Excerpt

Many were on hand to offer their services at the time of the American Revolution--to voice the grievances, to lead in battle, and to help mold the new government that replaced the colonial organization. We know much about the important figures of the revolutionary period--men like Washington, Greene, Knox, and Hamilton. But we do not know so much about some of the other active men of the times, although they too made their contribution. John Sullivan of New Hampshire was an early advocate of the patriot position, fought as a general officer in the war, served in the Continental Congress, took an active role in the politics of his state, and helped fight for the ratification of the United States Constitution. Sullivan led a full life and left his mark. I have chosen to tell his story, in this revision of my doctoral dissertation, so that more may be known of one man's contribution during those exciting and troublesome times. Since the appearance of Thomas C. Amory biography of Sullivan, The Military Services and Public Life of Major-General John Sullivan of the American Revolutionary Army (Boston, 1868), there has been no other biography of the man.

I have met courtesy wherever I have gone in search of materials, but I owe special thanks to Miss Charlotte D. Conover, former librarian of the New Hampshire Historical Society. No bibliographical query dismayed her. Dartmouth College and Yale University kindly allowed me study space and the use of their libraries. Mr. Philip Guyol generously gave me access to notes he had taken on Sullivan's career. Dr. Richard B. Morris . . .
