This book had its beginning on July 5, 1986, at a seemingly commonplace event that turned out to be a most historic occasion. The event was held in a small community in the Midwest and became known as the "July 5th Oklahoma Alzheimer's Disease Workshop." It was a one-day scientific meeting held in a church (the only available air-conditioned building that was suitable) and attended by noted research scientists from Harvard University; Burke Rehabilitation Center—Cornell Medical School; University of Washington, Seattle—Alzheimer Disease Research Center; University of Kentucky—Alzheimer Disease Research Center; and from other institutions, as well as members of Alzheimer's disease families, some of whom also spoke.
