It is a pleasing task to serve as editor of this first Family Process volume. It offers a special opportunity to present a picture of the remarkable range of developments that are now emerging in the field of family study and treatment. The journal, Family Process, came into being nearly ten years ago to provide a forum for the systematic examination of the nature of family living, to nourish the growth of a science of the family, and to evolve a method of healing troubled families. Launching the journal was, in itself, a great adventure. We took the gamble, and it paid off. At the outset we had no idea as to what would happen. In fact, we came in for some real surprises. The whole field of family study and treatment has moved off into some astonishing and unpredicted directions. As of now, Family Process, just turning the corner of its first decade of life, reflects these unexpected developments : new and ingenious ways of observing and defining family interaction, and bold and varied explorations of the potentials of family therapy.
Family Process had made a good start. It is cultivating a readership, a writership, and a scholarship revolving around the issue of unsolved problems of family behavior. Of particular importance is the support and inspiration which this journal has given to the pioneers in the field of family and to the young professionals who elect to work on the thin edge of new knowledge about the human family. Already this new generation of workers demonstrates its merit with its own brand of innovative investigation. What the next ten years will bring, no one can really know. But one thing is certain; there will be more surprises, more startling and novel developments in the study of family transaction. In its second decade of life, it is hoped that Family Process . . .
