Why does traditional psychotherapy take so long?

In a world where everything is moving faster, can't we find a way to effect psychological change that doesn't run into years and cost a fortune?

This was the prime question we asked ourselves during our combined half-century of clinical experience in psychiatry and clinical psychology.

First of all, we began to synthesize our knowledge about various schools of psychotherapy with the emerging data from the new science of thinking, or cognition. We devoted particularly close study to the process by which individuals achieve personal change. The bottom line seemed to be this:

Ask someone how his life has changed for the better and one thing you will be sure to hear is "my thinking has changed."
