Those of us who have witnessed the spectacular development of psychoanalysis have felt the need of applying analytic psychotherapy to ever wider groups of suffering individuals. The content of this book is a demonstration that this need is being increasingly realized, a proof of the rapid development of psychotherapy in our time. It is indeed indicative of the growing interest in and the expansion of psychotherapeutic methods that the Salmon Lectures, an annual psychiatric lecture series taking place in the New York Academy of Medicine, were devoted in 1951 to "The Place and Scope of Psychotherapy."

Today concrete form has been given to the stirring vision of Freud who, as far back as 1918, in a paper delivered before the Fifth International Psychoanalytic Congress in Budapest, said: "I will cast a glance at a situation which belongs to the future—one that will seem fantastic to many of you, but which I think, nevertheless, deserves that we should be prepared for it. You know that the therapeutic effects we can achieve are very inconsiderable in number ...

"Now let us assume that by some kind of organization we were able to increase our numbers to an extent sufficient for treating large masses of people ... Then clinics and consultation-departments will be built, to which analytically oriented physicians will be appointed, so that the men who would otherwise give way to drink, the women who have nearly succumbed under the burden of privations, the children for whom there is no choice but running wild or neurosis, may be made by analysis able to resist and able to do something in the world."

It is a mark of the great progress achieved in a relatively short time that, a little over thirty years later, the "clinics and consultation-departments" which he then considered as a utopia . . .
