This is the thirtieth anniversary of my involvement in radical politics. In 1969, I participated in my first demonstration in Washington, D.C. as a senior from Philadelphia’s Central High School against the Vietnam War. It was not long afterward that I arrived at Temple University and joined the Students for a Democratic Society and continued my fight against racism and war. This is the twenty-first anniversary of my joining the Socialist Party, USA, and, on August 28, 1978, of my election as local chairperson of the Socialist Party of Greater Philadelphia. Osborn, and Conrad Weiler, Jr., of the Department of Political Science of Temple University; my college friend Dr. Paul Halpern, a physicist, for many helpful discussions over the years; my many comrades in the Socialist Party, USA, among them Robert W. Tucker and former Socialist mayor of Milwaukee Frank P. Zeidler for the rare and valuable books they have given me that went into the research for this work; and Merle Sue Marcus, who I think was happier than anyone for me when she heard the news about this book being published. Last but not least, I would like to thank Dr. James T. Sabin, Director of Academic Research and Development for the Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., and copy editor Judy Cardanha for their generous and kind help in publishing this work.

Perseverantia Vincit is the motto of my three-time alma mater Temple University, where I received my bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in
