It is often said that there has been greater scientific and technological development in the twentieth century than during any comparable period in human history, and perhaps in all of human history. Nothing demonstrates this transformation of society through science and technology more effectively than the efforts to explore space. Among such endeavors undertaken by various nations, the United States has been a leader almost from the dawn of the space age.

This work is intended as a brief historical synthesis of the contours of space exploration since the first experimentation with rocket technology in the early part of the twentieth century, through the attempts in the 1990s to build a permanently occupied space station. A substantial Chronology of Events outlines the key events in this progression of research and space activity. Thereafter, Chapters 1 through 4 examine several significant issues related to the politics and technology of space exploration. However, they serve only as an introduction to the rich history of this activity.

The chapters elucidate several sets of documents that help to fill out the larger story of the development of space exploration in the last half of the twentieth century. Organized in this volume by theme, they represent the variety of documentary materials available for use by those wishing to understand the rise of space exploration. Also included in this volume are biographical sketches of key people associated with space flight, a listing of the human space flight missions undertaken since 1961, and an annotated bibliography that offers additional reading on this critical subject in the history of the twentieth century.
