The object of the present work is to make it possible for English readers, particularly students of mediaeval history in the Universities, to know something of the important contributions which modem German historians have made in recent years to the history of mediaeval Germany. The work was first planned as long ago as 1935, and was a direct result of experience acquired as a teacher of mediaeval history in Oxford and subsequently in Cambridge. I found, when I began to teach in Oxford, that the paucity of English works on mediaeval Europe imposed serious limitations on the teacher, and made it very difficult to recommend reading which offered more than either a superficial or else an antiquated point of view. I found, in particular, that it was almost impossible to put students in touch with the vital questions on which European historical scholarship is concentrated at the present day, and therefore difficult to awaken the interest which such questions might be expected to arouse in informed and intelligent pupils. There were many issues which were literally unknown to a majority of students, and which were bound to remain unknown, unless they could be brought face to face with the work of modem continental scholars. And the biggest gaps of all were in the history of Germany. It was rare to have to deal with a pupil unable to make use of French authorities, but those who were in a position to study the work of German historians were perhaps rarer still.
