The History and Character of Calvinism

Excerpt

Since the first edition of this book the output of studies in the history of Calvinism has continued in ample and unceasing flow. It would have been impracticable to revise the text with adequate response to these; and the decision to leave it substantially unchanged has been rendered easier by the fact that the newer scholarship has not, I believe, invalidated any major statement or serious point of interpretation contained in it. The short Postscript appended briefly comments on some of the recent developments and viewpoints. The Book List has been substantially revised. A few sentences have been rewritten on pp. 41, 200, 213, 222, 225, 231, 234, 246, 405, 410 and 424. Otherwise the alterations are minute corrections only. I am very grateful to the Oxford University Press for making the book available to a wider reading public in the paperback edition.
