Excerpt

This book was first published in 1953 under the title The Electoral System in Britain 1918-1951. It is now brought up to date. The text of Part I remains substantially unaltered. In Part II, the only changes are those involved in extending the statistical data to cover the elections of 1955 and 1959. The Appendix dealing with Redistribution has been much expanded and a second Appendix has been added to deal with such discussion of the electoral system as has taken place in the last ten years.

I must record my indebtedness to the Warden and Fellows of Nuffield College both for enabling me to make this study a decade ago and for their continued encouragement of research into elections. I must also thank Mr. H. G. Nicholas and Mr. P. M. Williams, who once again have provided most valuable advice and criticism, and Miss Jennie Freeman and Miss Audrey Carruthers for their diligent assistance.
