The peasant heaved the long, smooth, wooden pole, shiny with use, into a comfortable position across the sinewy muscles of his shoulders. Two large bamboo baskets, bulging with lumps of limestone, hung from each end of the pole. The inscrutable face, shaded from the harsh northern Chinese sun by a conical bamboo hat, did not give any hint of his racing thoughts as he continued with his mundane activity, and merged with the lines of other look-alike peasants in loose smocks of coarse-woven cloth, seamless ankle-length trousers and bare feet, desultorily jogging down the dusty . . .
