In the aftermath of September II, 2001 and in light of the increasing number of asylum seekers landing on our shores during the past few years, a heated debate began in Australiain newspapers, over talkback radio and even on television—about the presence of Islam and Muslims in Australia. Some argued that it is time for us to take a hard look at Islam and the potential threat it poses to Australia, its society and values. Others argued that such a generalisation is untenable given the enormous diversity of Muslim people and Islamic practice—one cannot put all 1200 million Muslims of the world in one basket and label them all as terrorists. In this debate, Muslims were often put on the defensive. Their basic beliefs, values and norms and religious institutions suddenly became the focus of the media and even Australian security services. ‘Islam’ and ‘Muslim’ became problematic labels.
