Synopsis

This fascinating bibliography of source materials clearly demonstrates the significant roles blacks have played in the history and culture of Canada from its beginnings as well as their 400-year fight for equity and justice. Organized by area of endeavor and province, the sources listed point to blacks' history as soldiers, prospectors, educators, cowboys, homesteaders, entertainers, legislators, athletes, artists, servants, and writers.

Excerpt

My interest in Blacks and Canada began about two decades ago after visiting Toronto a few times. A friend of mine in advertising, Bob Bonin, took his friend Zdenka and me to the Underground Railroad restaurant for a fantastic “soul food” meal. On the walls were tools and other items related to slavery that I found extremely absorbing. Another time we strolled along the lake and listened to calypso music played by a Caribbean band on a pontoon boat. Once Bob and I went to see blues great Luther Allison, whom I had previously interviewed and photographed in Ann Arbor, Michigan. We even got the chance to talk to him a bit after the show.

From those experiences, many short trips to Ontario, as well as having discussions with two of my expatriate African American friends, I began to appreciate some of the history of Blacks in Canada. To me, it seemed almost inevitable that one day I would research some aspect of the subject.

The direct impetus for this volume stems from the research in a previous book, Blacks in the American West and Beyond—America, Canada, and Mexico. Although the focus was on the American West, there was enough material on Canada to include that country as well. However, most of the sources related to that book’s topic and not to the complete history of Canadian Blacks. This book, The History of Blacks in Canada: A Selectively Annotated Bibliography, focuses solely on Black people in Canada from their first arrival.
