For two reasons Demosthenes the Athenian holds a permanent place in the history of European civilization: first, as a statesman and practical politician he led the desperate struggle of the Athenian people to maintain the freedom of all the Greek city- states against the tide of imperialism which was sweeping down upon them from the North, and to defend the democracy of Athens from the extinction threatened by the Macedonian monarchy; second, Demosthenes was the first to embody completely the theories, devices, and embellishments of the new art of rhetoric in practical popular oratory.
